SpaceX Beat The Street. But The Real Story Is The $105 Billion Lockup And The Bitcoin That Didn't Move.

PlanBWhale Trends
The numbers are in. And they're almost offensive. SpaceX just posted revenue of $7.814 billion for Q2 — up 92% year over year. Adjusted EBITDA hit $3.538 billion, a 191% jump. Net loss shrank to $541 million from $1.008 billion. Operating loss? Improved from $970 million to $143 million. The market expected a beat. But not like this. Yet I'm not looking at the headline metrics. I'm looking at the balance sheet. And the balance sheet tells a very different story. One that involves $100 billion in cash, a Bitcoin position that hasn't moved in six months, and $15.8 billion of AI spending that's already generating a $1.257 billion operating loss. This is the most expensive narrative ever sold. And the exit door opens on August 6. Let me rewind a bit, because context matters. SpaceX went public in what was the record IPO of all time. Net proceeds: $85.675 billion. That's not a typo. The company now holds cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities worth nearly $100 billion. To put that in perspective: that's bigger than the entire market cap of most S&P 500 companies. But here's the twist. Out of that near-$100 billion pile, $65.625 billion sits in money-market funds. Another $4.011 billion is in government securities classified as cash equivalents. Add $6.487 billion in marketable government securities, and you've got $76.123 billion in essentially sterile, yield-chasing assets. Meanwhile, Bitcoin holdings stayed flat at 18,712 BTC with a cost basis of $661 million. No net change between Dec. 31 and June 30. Not a single coin added. Not a single coin sold. The fair value dropped from $1.637 billion to $1.098 billion, producing a $539 million unrealized loss. But the position is still $437 million above cost. You'd think a company with $100 billion in cash might double down on the hardest asset on earth. Nope. I've been covering crypto since before the ICO mania. And I didn't need a Bloomberg terminal to know this was coming. The moment SpaceX filed its S-1, I wrote that the Bitcoin position would become irrelevant. It wasn't a treasury strategy. It was a footnote. And now the footnote is officially a rounding error. Bitcoin represents about 1.1% of SpaceX's cash stack, down from 6.6% at year-end. In crypto terms, that's not HODLing. That's just an asset you forgot to sell. The real capital is going somewhere else. And it's going there at breakneck speed. AI infrastructure absorbed $15.828 billion in Q2 alone. That's 21 times the $749 million spent a year earlier, and roughly double Q1's deployment. It represents 86% of total quarterly capex of $18.369 billion. Wall Street expected AI spending of $13.09 billion. SpaceX blew that out of the water. Over the first half, AI capex hit $23.551 billion compared to $3.316 billion in H1 2025. That's 83% of all investments. The company is building data centers, leasing compute to Google and Anthropic, and pushing its own Grok models. CFO Bret Johnsen says contracted compute deployments have payback periods of less than one year. Faster than launch sites. Faster than satellite infrastructure. On a contract-by-contract basis, that's excellent capital efficiency. But here's the part that keeps me up at night. The AI segment still lost $1.257 billion in operating income. Depreciation and amortization ate $1.885 billion. Research and development consumed another $2.178 billion. Yes, AI revenue hit $2.561 billion for the quarter, driven by those contracts. But the burn rate is real. Johnsen expects capex to stay at similar levels for the rest of the year. That means more losses, more depreciation, and more unproven bets. This is the classic tech growth story: spend aggressively, capture market share, and hope the payback period doesn't stretch before the market punishes you. I've been in this game long enough to know what happens when a high-flying company pairs an enormous lockup expiration with crowded short interest. The same pattern repeats. First, the narrative peaks. Second, the sell-side starts whispering about insider supply. Third, the crypto derivatives market starts pricing in volatility. Then the floor drops. The only question is whether the company's cash flow can catch the falling knife. Let's talk about that lockup. On August 6, insiders become eligible to sell approximately 900 million shares. At current prices, that's worth around $105 billion. Tom Dunleavy, Head of Venture at Varys Capital, says this could be one of the largest lockup expirations in market history. It's the first stage. Another block unlocks after Q3 earnings. More restrictions expire on December 8. By then, about 40% of outstanding shares could be freely tradable. Elon Musk's stake remains locked until June 2027, but everyone else can run for the exits. I don't need to spell out the math. When you unlock $105 billion worth of stock, the supply only goes in one direction initially. Unless the fundamentals are so strong that new buyers absorb it. And that's a big unless. Short sellers already smell blood. S3 Partners estimates that 95% of borrowable SPCX shares are out on loan. Short interest has reached 34% of the public float. That's not a warning. That's a crowded trade. But here's the thing about crowded shorts: they can lead to violent short squeezes. Or they can lead to what happened to many Chinese tech stocks after massive lockups — a slow bleed that justifies the bears. The data points both ways. On the crypto side, CoinGlass shows SPCX futures volume at $6.85 billion in the last 24 hours, with open interest approaching $720 million. That's the highest level since the contract launched. But open interest is two-sided. For every bear shorting, there's a bull going long. The question is which side is leveraged. And right now, with 95% of borrowable shares already out, the next marginal seller is a fundamental seller, not a tactical short. This is where I'm getting contrarian. Everyone is focused on the supply overhang. But they're ignoring the demand signal. The AI contracts are real. The revenue is real. The payback period is real. If you believe that compute demand is a multi-year supercycle, then SpaceX's AI spending is not a money pit. It's a moat. The $14.1 billion in cloud-services agreements, plus another $6.7 billion signed after the quarter, would roughly validate that. Google and Anthropic don't sign billion-dollar compute deals for shits and giggles. They need the chips. And they're willing to pay for them. That means SpaceX's AI segment could flip to operating profitability faster than the models expect. The more interesting angle is what this does to Bitcoin miners. I've been saying this since the SpaceX-Anthropic deal leaked: miners are now competing with a company that has deeper pockets and faster execution. SpaceX can buy GPUs by the pallet. It can negotiate electricity contracts at scale. It can offer cloud services with margins miners can only dream of. The message to the crypto mining industry is clear: if you're pivoting to AI, you're not entering a green field. You're entering a battlefield where the enemy has a $100 billion war chest. Miners should stick to what they know. Bitcoin. Because even with a $539 million unrealized loss, holding Bitcoin is still a balance sheet strength. It's proof that a company can survive market cycles. AI compute, on the other hand, is a yield farm that requires constant reinvestment to stay ahead of the curve. This brings me back to the broader market. Sideways price action. Chop. Low-volume drift. Everyone waiting for a catalyst. And here's the thing: the catalyst isn't going to come from Bitcoin. It's going to come from the public markets. When SpaceX's lockup hits, the volatility in SPCX futures will spill into crypto sentiment. If SPCX craters, retail traders will panic and sell their BTC to cover margin calls in equities. If SPCX holds up, it will validate that institutional demand can absorb supply. I've seen this play out in microcosm during the DeFi summer. When SushiSwap unlocked its team tokens, everyone braced for a dump. Some products crashed. Others recovered because the underlying revenue was growing. The difference between survival and death was cash flow. SpaceX has cash flow. The question is whether AI can generate enough of it to offset the dilution. Let's talk about the elephant in the room. The cash pile. $100 billion in cash. And the company isn't buying Bitcoin. Instead, it's parked in money-market funds yielding maybe 5% annualized. That's a $5 billion annual yield on idle cash. But when you have 34% of your public float shorted, you need more than yield. You need a narrative. And the narrative is AI. Not Bitcoin. Bitcoin is now a stale footnote. The "Bitcoin proxy" thesis is dead. Investors who bought SPCX to get Bitcoin exposure were always buying the wrong vehicle. The real Bitcoin exposure is in MicroStrategy, or better yet, in Bitcoin itself. SpaceX is an AI cloud company that also happens to launch rockets. That's the trade now. Algorithms smell fear, but they respect speed. And right now, the market is moving fast. The short sellers moved first. The derivatives market moved second. Now we wait for the insiders. If they dump, the stock drops. But here's the contrarian angle that nobody is talking about: a $105 billion unlock is a massive supply shock, but it also creates an opportunity for institutional accumulation. Pensions. Sovereign wealth funds. Index funds. They don't buy into strength. They buy into liquid supply. For years, SpaceX shares were locked in private markets. Now they're available. The very event that's supposed to trigger a crash could trigger the final step in the company's institutionalization. That's not a bear case. That's a structural argument. I didn't say it would be smooth. But I've watched enough lockups to know that the second wave, after the initial flush, is often the real launchpad. Let me give you a historical smell. In 2021, when Coinbase executed its direct listing, the stock popped then dropped from $429 to $208 in two months. The unlock pressure was overwhelming. But then the company started generating real revenue. Eventually, the stock recovered. The same thing happened with Robinhood. Post-IPO lockup dips are buying opportunities for patient capital. The problem is most crypto traders aren't patient. They're leveraged. They see red candles and panic. And that's exactly when the algorithms eat them alive. Yield is a drug; exit liquidity is the cure. SpaceX's exit liquidity is its cash pile and its AI contracts. The question is whether you're positioned to take advantage of the shakeout. I'll be honest with you. I was in the room with BlackRock executives during the ETF launch. I've seen the institutional playbook. It's not about being right. It's about being early. And right now, the market is early to the downside. The short interest is crowded. The exchange data shows open interest at record highs. That's not a signal to join the bear side. That's a signal to prepare for the squeeze. The most dangerous positions are the ones that everyone agrees on. "Sell the unlock" is so obvious that it's likely already priced in. But the insider behavior is the unknown. Some employees will sell no matter what. Others will hold. The mix determines the direction. And I'd bet on a knee-jerk drop followed by a rapid recovery if the AI numbers keep coming in strong. Look, I'm not saying SpaceX is a safe stock. It's not. It's a leveraged bet on AI compute, space infrastructure, and Elon's ability to keep selling dreams. But the market is treating it like a dying meme stock. That's the real mispricing. The revenue growth rate is 92%. The EBITDA growth rate is 191%. The company is signing multi-billion dollar compute contracts with firms that don't do profligate spending. This is not a Zig Zag coin with a fake burn mechanism. This is a real business that happens to sit at the intersection of crypto, AI, and space. The Bitcoin holdings are a distraction. The AI spending is the story. And the lockup is the last piece of forced selling before a new equilibrium. We don't get to see insider order flow, but we can smell the margin call from here. Anyone who bought SPCX at the IPO pop and used leverage is already feeling the heat. The futures market is screaming. But remember, chaos is just data waiting for a narrative. The narrative is changing. The next wave of headlines won't be about Bitcoin. They'll be about SPCX's post-lockup price discovery. And that price discovery will determine whether crypto traders treat SpaceX as a threat or an ally. If SPCX survives the unlock, money flows into AI and crypto alike. If it craters, we see a drawdown across both asset classes. There's no middle ground. So where does that leave you? I've been here before. In 2017, I spot-listed Hshare hours before the big exchange, and I learned that speed is the only edge. In 2020, I was deep in DeFi yield farms, watching APYs drop as soon as the incentives stopped. The lesson was simple: the exit matters more than the entrance. The same applies to SpaceX. The entrance was a record IPO. The exit is the lockup expiration. And the smart move is not to panic-sell or buy blindly. The smart move is to watch the August 6 volume. If the market absorbs the supply without collapsing below the first support, the shorts will have to cover. If it breaks, the next stop is a much lower price. Don't guess. Position. Here's the takeaway that matters. SpaceX is not a Bitcoin story. It's an AI compute story with a side of rockets. The unchanged Bitcoin balance is a signal that treasury diversification is dead in the era of AI infrastructure. The $100 billion cash pile is a war chest for data centers, not digital assets. And the lockup is the final test. If you're a crypto investor, stop treating SPCX as a Bitcoin proxy. Treat it as the intersection of two of the most capital-intensive industries on earth. And prepare for volatility. Algorithms smell fear, but they respect speed. The next 72 hours will tell us who's got both. I didn't build a rocket company. But I've audited enough token vesting schedules to know that the biggest risk is never the unlock itself. It's the assumption that everyone will act the same way. Some insiders will sell. Others will wait. Some shorts will take profits. Others will double down. The chaos is the opportunity. And the opportunity is in the prices that form after the panic subsides. Stay fast. Stay liquid. And for God's sake, don't buy the supposed "Bitcoin proxy" if you care about Bitcoin. Buy what the company is actually spending on: compute. That's the new energy. And SpaceX controls a lot of it.
