But the pattern demands scrutiny. Repeated sequences in financial data are rarely random. They reflect a systematic choice by capital allocators.
This is not a blockchain protocol. There is no smart contract to audit, no tokenomics to model. The product is a financial wrapper: a traditional ETF holding Bitcoin as its underlying asset. Approved by the SEC in January 2024, it connects the legacy finance rails to the hardest asset. The mechanics are simple: authorized participants create and redeem shares against real Bitcoin held by a custodian—Coinbase being the dominant one. The technical complexity is minimal. The economic complexity is not.
Fifty percent of the ETF market is controlled by BlackRock’s IBIT. Fidelity holds another quarter. The rest is split among a dozen issuers. The flows are concentrated, reflecting the same institutional gravity that governs traditional ETFs. But the underlying asset is different. Bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21 million coins. Every ETF share purchased represents a fraction of a real coin locked in a custody wallet. The cumulative effect since January: approximately 900,000 Bitcoin now sit in ETF custody.
