Proto-Danksharding gave rollups blob space that cut data publication costs by over ninety percent. Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, zkSync — they all went production. The throughput bottleneck that defined Ethereum's first eight years? Solved. Not theoretically, not in a testnet whitepaper, but in production, with billions of dollars of TVL moving across L2s every single day. The Rollup-centric roadmap wasn't a slide deck anymore; it was the operating system of the largest settlement layer in crypto. From my seat in Bangkok, watching governance proposals and cross-chain bridges multiply like tropical mildew, the scale of this achievement is genuinely staggering. But here's the uncomfortable truth nobody in Glamsterdam wants to address over their third Aperol spritz: scaling solved the throughput problem and simultaneously created a fragmentation crisis that is now the single greatest threat to Ethereum's long-term viability. An ecosystem where a hundred specialized execution environments compete for the same settlement layer is not chaos; it's the evolutionary biology of value. We are the archaeologists of the abstract, excavating meaning from layers of tokens and proofs, and what we're uncovering is that Ethereum's next phase isn't about unifying users into one experience — it's about building the substrate that makes heterogeneity feel seamless. That's a fundamentally different engineering problem. It requires solving coordination, not consolidation. It requires accepting that the cathedral has become a city, and cities are messy. Which brings me to Hegotá. The geographic metaphor in that title is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Glamsterdam is the past — the Eurocentric, developer-heavy, infrastructure-obsessed era where the community's identity was forged in European venues and American VC termsheets. Hegotá signals the future: the Global South, real-world adoption, the unglamorous work of making Ethereum useful for people who don't attend Devcon and never will. During my time running EthGallery and watching the NFT mania collapse, I learned that the people who genuinely need trustless coordination — artists without galleries, farmers without banks, communities without property registries — don't care about sequencer decentralization or blob space economics. They care about whether the thing works, whether it's cheap enough, and whether it doesn't get them arrested. The next phase of Ethereum isn't about technology. It's about translation — turning a decade of infrastructure brilliance into something the Global South can actually use.
